About Dr. John Francis:
My interest and exposure to neuroscience began in childhood. My father was a doctorate level Neuroendocrinologist (expert on hormones and their influence on behavior). He later became a physician and encouraged me also to pursue medicine. My father taught me how to use the scientific process, listen to patients, and use intuition to practice good medicine. In medical school I was taught traditional medicine but from a holistic approach, and to respect non-invasive and alternative treatments My formal training in psychiatry began in my internship at the world famous Menninger Clinic. I completed residency training at Baylor School of Medicine in Houston, Texas where Menninger relocated. My experience in training merged the most interesting elements to me in psychiatry including psychotherapy and theories thereof, and a biological or medical model to understand the brain which embraces effective and emerging treatments, technologies, and approaches in a field considered to be one of the last frontiers of medicine. I completed a fellowship in pychodynamic psychotherapy from the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute, and also finished a fellowship in Child Psychiatry at Baylor before moving back to my home town of Kansas City. I am greatful to my patients who continually teach me every day, and I am committed to helping them find effective, humane, and practical treatments of problems for which they have not yet found solutions.
